The construction industry added 21,000 jobs in January, as a second consecutive month of unseasonably mild-winter weather helped the industry raise employment to a two-year high, according to an analysis of new federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials cautioned that the gains remain fragile amid declining public sector investments in construction and infrastructure.

Construction equipment manufacturers anticipate overall business to close out 2011 with double-digit increases over last year in the U.S., Canada and worldwide. Growth is expected to continue but at a slower pace for 2012 through 2014, according to the annual business outlook survey of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers.
AEM is the North American-based international trade group representing the off-road equipment manufacturing industry. Each year the association polls its construction equipment manufacturer members about anticipated sales of the machines and equipment that build and repair roads, bridges, houses, offices, schools and other infrastructure worldwide.

Demolition of St. John’s Mercy in Joplin underway
 JOPLIN, Mo. -- In a dual demolition and groundbreaking ceremony, a wrecking ball took the first hit in bringing down Mercy's Joplin hospital that was struck by an EF5 tornado last May. Mercy also broke ground on the new hospital that will open in early 2015.
“It’s hard to say goodbye to the building that has been St. John’s since 1968,” said Gary Pulsipher, president of St. John’s Mercy. “But like the rest of the city, we are glad to be moving ahead and looking to the future. While we will never forget what happened here, taking down the hospital is another step in the process of removing the visible signs of the tornado’s devastation from the landscape.”

Construction employment increased in 148 out of 337 metropolitan areas between December 2010 and December 2011, decreased in 128 and stayed level in 61, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. The construction employment increases were likely fueled by a 4.3 percent increase in total construction spending between December 2010 and December 2011, driven largely by growing private-sector demand, association officials noted.
