Global Construction Credential to Address Skilled Workforce Shortage

ALACHUA, Fla. — The availability of qualified workers, according to a survey published in a recent report on workforce mobility by the World Economic Forum, was the most important factor for multinational companies in selecting locations to expand businesses. The report also found critical skills gaps exist between what employees possess and what businesses need. Because of these gaps, businesses cannot find the skilled workers needed, and individuals may be ill-equipped for the jobs of the future.

To meet this global need for skilled workers in the construction industry, NCCER announces its partnership with Edexcel to develop an international, industry-recognized credential for construction craft professionals. As part of its Global Workforce Development Initiative, NCCER has begun adapting its systems for international accreditation, instructor certification, training and assessment delivery and credentialing.

“The shortage of skilled craft professionals in the construction industry is not a domestic problem, but a global one,” said NCCER President Don Whyte. “The goal of our partnership with Edexcel is to create an international workforce of trained craft professionals with a credential that allows verification of qualifications by any employer, anywhere in the world.”

Edexcel, a Pearson company, is a global educational service provider offering internationally recognized qualifications and testing to schools, colleges, employers, training providers and other places of learning in 85 countries worldwide. Through the partnership, Edexcel will manage the accreditation and implementation of NCCER's international programs. Ultimately, the goal is to create a sustainable workforce of credentialed craft professionals around the world.
