Turner Construction Company Project Recognized as Sports Facility of the Year

The Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, has been named sports facility of the year by 2015 Sports Business Awards.

The project team — led by a Turner-Devcon joint venture — used a Design-Build approach to accelerate the construction process and deliver on a promise to turn over the stadium in time for the 49ers" first 2014 preseason game — a mere two years after the start of schematic designs.

Turner Stadium“Since we did our first Design-Build NFL stadium for the Denver Broncos, which finished in 2001, Design-Build has increased as a preferred project delivery method,” said Dave Masel, vice president and construction executive in Turner's Sports Group. He continued, “Now with BIM, it's much more advanced. It's a great way to build a building. At Levi's, we were able to put in 30 miles of underground conduit, piping and other utilities before we drove one pile. Design-Build and BIM let us do that. We put $100 million worth of work in place in the first 100 days. That's fast.”

The 1.85-million-square-foot stadium seats 68,500 fans (jumping up to 75,000 for special events) and is LEED Gold certified, featuring a 27,000-square-foot green roof atop the suite tower, solar arrays, live dashboards where fans can monitor the stadium's energy usage, reclaimed wood in owners" suites, reclaimed water systems for both potable and non-potable use and more.

“We opened the stadium six weeks early and we were able to move the 49ers in to certain program areas six to eight months early,” added Mr. Masel. “We wouldn"t have been able to do it without our super super staff. They gelled really well together and had a real eagerness to learn and a dedication to their work. It worked out tremendously.”
